Timber Deck Treatment and Maintenance Guide

In order to maintain and enhance the beautiful appearance of your timber deck it is essential that you apply the best possible wood treatment.

UV light causes the greatest degree of breakdown in wood coating products and Rystix Timbacare has proven its premium quality characteristics in environments with solar radiation levels up to three times those experienced in the UK. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research also confirmed that Rystix out-performed its competitors.

It is recommended that Rystix Exterior Armadek or Rystix Exterior Sealer is used for the treatment of all softwood and hardwood timber decks except in the case of hardwood timbers with high oil content such as Ipe. In this instance the Rystix Exterior Sealer should be applied in conjunction with the hardening additive for the sealer.

Exterior Armadek and Exterior Sealer are available in a range of 5 colours and a clear variant which are compatible across the products. Both products are tough, grain enhancing, translucent sealers providing years of protection.

After a number of years you should check for wear on the surface of the coating. Depending on traffic volumes and weathering you will need to apply a maintenance coat which will involve washing down the surface with a light detergent soap and then re-coating.

Failure to treat your deck will result in deterioration to the appearance. Ultra Violet (UV light) is a form of high energy, which is of a particular wavelength that is able to penetrate the surface of wood. Because it is high energy it actually breaks down and destroys the cellulose structure of timber. Over a period of time depending on how long the exposure is and how concentrated the UV is, wood turns grey and eventually you will find the surface powders.

If you prefer to oil your deck each year rather than sealing it then a high quality penetrating wood oil is the answer .....

Rystix Exterior Penetrating Oil

Rystix Exterior Penetrating Oil is a low film build, deep penetrating moisture resistant timber oil. It penetrates into the surface of the timber giving a water repellant durable coating. It also has a high resistance to fungal attack through the action of approved fungicides and biocides. It dries slowly to form an attractive matt sheen which enhances the appearance of the original timber. Suitable for application to any softwood or hardwood including timber with a high natural oil content or timber that has been treated with wax based products.

Economical protective coating for exterior doors, windows, patios and decks, fascias, picket fences and all woodwork which is likely to be directly or indirectly exposed to the weather.

Warning: UV Protection: The clear variant contains some UV filters and inhibitors, but no pigment to enhance UV protection. For better UV protection, the mahogany, oak or cedar colours with the UV filters and inhibitors will increase coating lifespan and better protect the timber.
