How to Build a Deck in 5 Easy Steps

Step 1 Level/Prepare the Site

Decks will usually shade the ground preventing weed growth, but removing the weeds before you begin makes life easier.

After measuring, levelling and setting out the area using wooden pegs and string remove the soil to a depth of 100-150mm and cover with a membrane (This prevents weeds growth)

This can be held in place by concrete slabs placed at the corners, which form a solid foundation for your deck.

Step 2 Building the Deck Frame

A rectangular deck is the simplest form giving a large practical surfacearea, Whilst also being the easiest to construct.

The basic deck construction is shown.

Please remember deck frames can be fixed with galvanised or tri-coated fixings and cut ends must be sealed with an end coat to maintain the effectiveness of the pressure treatment process.

Step 3 Fixing the Deck Boards

Deck Board fixing is the most visual part of the deck. It is also the most satisfying part to do.
Achieving a professional finish is important.

Place your first deck board flush with the face of the joist at the front of the deck and fix using galvanised or tri-coated deck screws, 2 on each joist bearing point.

Repeat this on each deck board remembering to leave a gap of 3-5mm.

Different styles can be achieved with a little imagination.

Step 4 Fitting Railings

The safety and beauty of your deck can be enhanced with the addition of railings.

A number of systems are available and the manufacturer instructions should be followed.

Step 5 Staining and Maintaining

Once finished your deck can be coloured to suit your own taste by using a deck stain.

Keeping your deck clean is important to prolong its attractiveness.

Should the weather make the deck timber fade in colour or algae grows on the surface, a deck cleaner can be used to rejuvenate its look.

Re-protecting the deck surface each year with a clear water repellent is recommended to keep your deck looking good.
